Public Housing Renovation
Project type
Public Housing Renovation
Date
May 2015
Location
San Francisco, California
Role
Designer at MEI Architects, working alongside Gelfand Partners in San Francisco, CA.
Ping Yuen East, West and Center were the first public housing projects to be constructed in the early 1950's in San Francisco's historic Chinatown.
The buildings were occupied during the rehabilitation, with 434 units of affordable housing. The renovation included new bathroom, kitchens and flooring, and a fresh coat of paint for each apartment. A new community center was added in Ping Yuen Center's courtyard along with new staff offices throughout. The main entrance and fences at each building were updated with a modern, friendly look. Elevators, building system improvements, along with seismic and structural repairs as well as new security were also included.
